Our people
Our board comprises Rod Benson, Nic Tsangarakis (co-founders) and Darby Honeyman.
Rod Benson
I grew up in Cape Town and, after traveling across the USA in a camper with my wife, we settled in Vancouver in 1974. I had just graduated as a Chartered Accountant, and my dream was to start my own business. In 1978, a partner and I founded Danicabrands, which is now run successfully by our sons and their partner. It was a long, challenging journey to get the company stable, and I loved every moment.
Growing up in South Africa gave me so much, and I am deeply grateful. When the Hershlers shared plans to launch Education Without Borders, I eagerly joined and served on the board for 20 years. Mentoring young businesspeople has always been a passion, both formally and informally, and FESA offers me a meaningful way to truly impact the lives of disadvantaged South African youth.
In retirement, I enjoy playing golf, working out, volunteering, traveling, and spending time with my eight grandchildren.
Nic Tsangarakis
Born in Greece and raised in South Africa, I’ve called Vancouver home since 1995. I was the Managing Partner (Vancouver) at MICA (later Knightsbridge), where I supported organizations through change and growth. Later, I co-founded Kwela Leadership & Talent Management to help BC management teams build stronger leadership cultures and strategic plans.
I hold a Masters in Operations Management from the University of Cape Town and served six years on the board of Education without Borders, advancing educational opportunities. My passion for South Africa remains strong; it’s a country that profoundly shaped my values and drive to give back.
I enjoy squash and sharing my life with Sharon and our dog, Toffee. Through Foster Entrepreneurs South Africa, I hope to help young entrepreneurs build micro-businesses and shape a brighter future for themselves.
Darby Honeyman
I grew up in Winnipeg, and have lived in Vancouver since 1982.
I worked as a Physiotherapist and Clinic Business Co-Owner of Expert Physio from 1986 until my retirement in 2021. During this time, I also taught post-graduate manual therapy courses for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. I held many positions on the Board of the Physiotherapy Private Practice Division, as well as the College of Physiotherapists of British Columbia.
I have loved mentoring many physiotherapists over the years, both in clinical practice and in business management.
Additionally, I served on the Burnaby Heights Business Improvement Association as a Board Member and President for seven years.
I was honoured to be a member of the international Women’s Presidents Organization from 2007 until 2021.
Now that I am retired, I have more time for hiking, cycling, the arts, and playing with my friends and family.
I am very excited to work collaboratively with South Africa’s new entrepreneurs as they create business opportunities for themselves and their communities.
